As you may have noticed through various media, violent demonstrations are currently ongoing in Bangladesh. The activists (mainly students) anger is primarily directed towards the country’s system to get a job in the public sector. However, it seems like corruption and lack of democracy is a part of the problem as well and it is now affecting the entire country.
The demonstrations have been ongoing since early July and at least 300 people have been killed and many others injured in the violent conflicts between the different groups.
In addition to the violence, internet services have been slowing down over the past few days, and a curfew has been imposed by the government. When our agent was able to contact us, they told us that the disruptions will cause delays in their communication, but they will send us updates again as soon as they can.
We can also see that many factories remain closed, and the handling of both sea and air freight cargo is very limited, considering that most roads are blocked by demonstrators.
Yesterday the Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, resigned from her position. A transitional government has now taking control of the country for some time to come.
We will, of course, continue to follow the situation in the country and provide updates to those affected.
